The Aboriginal people have lived in Australia for 60,000 years. There were 500 Aboriginal tribes in Australia by 1788. In 1788, the first European settlers arrived in Australia. They took the Aborigines’ land and the Aboriginal people became the settlers’ slaves. In 1967, there was a law against racial discrimination. Since 1967 the Aboriginal people have had the right to vote but they are still asking for their lost lands. In 1993, the Aboriginal people obtained the right of property.
Today, the Aboriginal people represent 1.5 % of the Australian population
