Australia is divided into six big territories: Western Australia, South Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales (see the map on the Geography page). Canberra is the capital. Australia has about 16,250000 inhabitants and there are 25,0000 people in the capital. The country is about ten times bigger than France but it's about four times less populated. We know the main town, Sydney because the Olympic Games took place there in 2000 and there is the famous opera of Sydney (see the picture). On the Eastern coast of Australia, there is "The Great Barrier reef" (see the picture), it's 65 km wide and next to it, we can find tropical fish (about 1,500 species), 200 types of birds, reptiles, turtles, koalas and kangaroos. The koalas eat a lot of eucalyptus (see the photos). UNESCO listed the reef as a World Heritage Site in 1981. The flag is composed of the British flag on the top left corner and six stars which represent the six Australian territories. The country is composed of some mountains and deserts. The territory is very wide: from West to East, there is about 4000 km. The climate is hot because in spring it's about 29°C, in summer 32°C, in autumn 28°C and in winter 24°C. Australia is between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The tropic of Capricorn is in the middle of the country. Australia is a wealthy country because it has mineral resources such as gold, silver and copper. | ||
