Surfing comes from Hawai. At the beginning, the surfboards were made of coconut tree wood .The Maohi people have practised this sport since it was created in XlXth century. Then, in the years 1920, the surfboards became lighter and this sport became more popular. Then the aileron under the surfboards appeared.
In Australia, surfing is a very popular sport because the population lives near the sea, for example Sydney is at the seaside.
Australia with Hawai and California are the biggest surfing nations. In Australia you can surf on all seasides and there are the greatest surfing places in the world. So, the most famous surfing brands are Australian : Ripcurl, Billabong and Quicksilver.
The greatest world champions are Australian, among them, Nat Young, a legend in the 60s and the 70s and 4 times the world champion in the 80s. His son, Beau Young, was the world champion in 2000 and 2003. There are girls who surf, for example Layne Beachley, 6 times world champion; she is a living legend.
