CARLOS SANTANA
Interview
What is your name?
My name is CARLOS SANTANA.Where were you born and what is your life story ?
I was born in Autlan de Navaro Mexico in 1947. I grew up in the border town of tijuana where my family became establised in 1955. I was introduced to traditional music by my father, a mariachi violonist, when I was five year old. Aged 14, I started performing with my guitar in a local band "The strangers". In 1961, I moved to San Francisco where I continued to develop my unique style of music and I formed the Santana Blue Band in 1966. Today, I have millions of fans, new and old ones. What sort of music do you play?
I have enlarged pop music with my mix of blues, rock'n'roll, Afro Cuban and Latin sounds but for me, there are only 2 elements in playing: emotion and grace.Have you taken part in a humanitorian effort?
Yes, I have taken part in many humanitarian efforts including "Blues for Salvador" relief for the victims of the San Francisco earthquake and rights of Indigenous people.Reasons of our choice
My parents listen to Santana. Carlos Santana is an extroardinary musician. He plays with passion and this music expresses his humanitarian message.
Meaning of the song
It's about a girl called Maria. She grew up in a poor area of New York and she wants to have a better life. She hopes she 'll be able to get what she wants but it will be very hard because the gap between rich and poor people gets bigger and bigger.
Lyrics : Maria Maria

She reminds me of a west side story
Growing up in Spanish Harlem
She’s living the life just like a movie star

To the sounds of the guitar, yeah, yeah

Stop the looting, stop the shooting
Pick pocking on the corner
See as the rich is getting richer
The poorer is getting poorer
See mi y Maria on the corner
Thinking of ways to make it better
In my mailbox there’s an eviction letter
Somebody just said see you later
