We’ll speak about three monuments of London and New York : Tower bridge, the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.
1) Tower bridge
Tower bridge is in England in London. It’s a bascule bridge over the river Thames. The construction of the bridge started in 1886 and lasted 8 years. It opened in 1894.
The architects are W.Arrol, H.James and J.Wolfe Barry.
Tower bridge is 43m high and 286m long. Two massive piers, containing 70000kg of concrete were poured into the river to support the construction.
2) The Statue of liberty
The statue of Liberty is a statue given to the USA by France in the 19th century. It’s standing at Liberty island in the mouth of the Hudson river in New York as a welcome to all returning Americans, visitors and immigrants.
The statue is one of the most recognisable icons of the USA world-wide.
The sculptor was Frederic August Bartholdi. Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel tower, engineered the structure.
3) The Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is a big monument in New York. The construction began on 22nd January 1930. The project was hurried to completion in order to take the title of “world’s tallest building” from the Chrysler building.
The Empire State Building was officially open on may, 1st 1931, when president Herbert Hoover pressed a button in Washington D.C turning on the building lights.
On the top of the building there is a big light. It’s turned on according to the day. For example on Independence Day it’s red and blue.
A lot of films were shot in the Empire State building : King Kong in 1933, Love affair, Independence Day, Godzilla…
The Empire State Building is 381 meters high.
4) Our opinion
We have chosen to present monuments because we think it’s interesting and the monuments are beautiful. We would like to visit the tower of Pisa because it’s very beautiful.
