2. The article in "Easy Going"

On 2 November, Americans will vote in the presidential elections. Will theyre-elect Republican George W. Bush for a second and last term? Or will they replace him with John Kerry, the Democratic candidate?

This year's election is particularly important, because it's the first election since 1972 when the U.S.A. is at war. And the 2000 presidential election was very unusual: the Democratic candidate, Al Gore, won the popular vote, but George Bush won the election, because he got more Electoral College votes. In that election, there were a lot of problems with results that had to be recounted, particularly in the state of Florida, where Bush's brother is governor. This time, it will be easier: a lot of votes will be electronic.

George W. Bush, 58, is the incumbent president. Before 2000, he was Governor of Texas.  His father, George W. H. Bush, was president from 1989 to 1993.

John Kerry, 61, is a senator from Massachusetts. He won the majority of the Democratic primaries to get the party's nomination.

SO YOU WANT TO BE PRESIDENT?

To be a candidate for president, you have to be a minimum of 35 years old and have been born in the USA. You also need to raise a lot of money for your campaign. All previous presidents have been male and white. And since 1854, they have all been candidates for the Democratic or Republican parties.

In a recent survey, 54% of American 12-to-17-year-olds said they thought it was possible for them to be president. But almost 80% said they wouldn't be interested in the job. Why? Forty per cent said they weren't interested in politics or had other career plans, 20% said it was too much responsibility, 15% said it was too much work and 14% said that they wouldn't be good at it.

3. OUR KEYPALS' OPINIONS

BILL
Now, the United States President is George W.Bush Jr. He is the son of George W.Bush Sr who was also a president 15 years ago. When the president of U.S.A is elected, he/she serves a term of 4 years. If they are good, they could be reelected for a 2nd term. Now, George W.Bush Jr is running for his 2nd election of presidency against Senator John Kerry. George W.Bush Jr belongs to the Republican Party and John Kerry is a Democrat.

ALEX
The current candidates for the upcoming election in november are Kerry and Bush. Bush is re-running ! In america there are two major parties. they are democratic party and republican party.  Bush is part of republican party, and he supports the upperclass and prefers war in Iraq! But Kerry is supportive of enviromental issues! I personally do not like politics and do not know much about it.  But as far as i know about thiselection, I want Kerry to become the next president of United States!

DANIEL
I bel
ieve that George W Bush will win in the Presidential election here.  Who do you think will win?  I believe this because John Kery is always changing his mind when it comes to voting.  Recently we have found out that John Kerry voted to send troops to Iraq and then voted against funding them.  And arguably the war in Iraq was good because the world is a better place without Saddahm Hussein.  Do you agree?  Even though George Bush is "un peut stupide" he is still a good president.  He has improved the world and has made the U.S economy better.  What do you think about the war in Iraq?  I am proud to be living under the direction of G.W and if  I could I would definitely vote for him in this election year.

KELLY
I don't know which candidate I want to win the presidency.  I don't agree with all of their ideas.  We have two parties, the Democrats and the Republicans.  President George W. Bush jr. is running for the Republicans, his vice president is Cheney.  Kerry is running for the Democrates with Edwards.  Bush hasn't made good decisions in the past.  But, Kerry has been very unclear  about his plans for the future.

JAMES
The current president is George Bush, which you probably know. He has served for three and one-half years and wants to be re-elected, he is a Republican, one of the two major political parties. The other candidate is John Kerry, who is a Democrat, the second political party. I am a Republican, but I do not like George Bush. Bush started the War in Iraq, but Kerry has beliefs that I don't. I do not think either of the candidates are nice or smart, but I do think that Kerry would help America rebuild a relationship with Europe.

PAUL
George Bush is our President now and he has failed hard. He has been President for four years. The two major parties are the democrats and the republicans. The two canidates are Kerry and Bush. Kerry would make a great President because he is true and much smarter than Bush. In America, one must be 18 to vote, so I can't. This enrages me. My parents like Kerry too and want him to be our president. There are many big issues like gay marriage, Iraq, healthcare and oil. Gasoline is very expensive here and something needs to change. We need a new president.

CHASE
Right now here in the U.S. we are having a presidential election that is in its final month and will be decided only a few days after my birthday, which is November 3rd. Right now I believe George W. Bush will win, but more people will vote for John Kerry. The president here in the U.S. runs for 4 years and then can be re-elected for another 4 year term. The two major parties are the Republican party which has Mr. George W. Bush and the Democratic party who has John Kerry. My family is republican and I believe I will follow the same footsteps. This year between the two candidates there are alot of differences in opinions, which lead people to be serious followers or haters.

NORA
In America, we have one president that we elect and who stays in office for 4 years, but you aren't allowed to vote until you turn 18. This year is an "election year" and we have two main candidates running for office, their names are George W. Bush, and John Kerry. I am a fan of Kerry because I think that Bush has really made other countries around the world hate ours. For the past three months the two of them have been trying to win the support of the public by traveling around the country and making speeches and meeting people. The election is November 2nd, and they have been debating together for the past couple of weeks to prove who knows more and who cares more about our country. When we find out who has won the presidency (hopefully Kerry) he will move into the White House in January and will begin to make the decisions that will affect all of the Untited Sates.

LISA
The upcoming election is between Bush and Kerry.  The president at the moment is Bush but hopefully that will change!  I prefer the democratic party to the republic party.  The two candidates are very different.  Kerry has very strong environmental records as opposed to Bush who is in favor of major corporations.  Kerry has better long term motives in my opinion, especially for the environment.  Bush is commited to plans that promote the upper class, development, and corporations.  I don't agree with this and would vote in the election if I could.  I don't watch the news or TV very much because I don't like to hear about the war.  The war in Iraq is viewed as necessary by some people but to others it was a wasteful war for oil.  I dont agree with Bush and hope that Kerry wins.

HUNTER
So what do you think about the presidential election going on in the US? Are you a supporter of George W. Bush? He is our president right now just in case you didn't know that. He has been president for 4 years. I like the republican party ( That is what Bush is a part of). John Kerry is the other man who Bush is running against. I haven't watched the debates that are going on right now so I don't know any of the similarities or differences between the two canidates.
