On 2 November, Americans will vote in the presidential elections. Will theyre-elect Republican George W. Bush for a second and last term? Or will they replace him with John Kerry, the Democratic candidate? |
|
This year's election is particularly important, because it's the first election since 1972 when the U.S.A. is at war. And the 2000 presidential election was very unusual: the Democratic candidate, Al Gore, won the popular vote, but George Bush won the election, because he got more Electoral College votes. In that election, there were a lot of problems with results that had to be recounted, particularly in the state of Florida, where Bush's brother is governor. This time, it will be easier: a lot of votes will be electronic. |
George W. Bush, 58, is the incumbent president. Before 2000, he was Governor of Texas. His father, George W. H. Bush, was president from 1989 to 1993. |
![]() John Kerry, 61, is a senator from Massachusetts. He won the majority of the Democratic primaries to get the party's nomination. |
SO YOU WANT TO BE PRESIDENT? To be a candidate for president, you have to be a minimum of 35 years old and have been born in the USA. You also need to raise a lot of money for your campaign. All previous presidents have been male and white. And since 1854, they have all been candidates for the Democratic or Republican parties. In a recent survey, 54% of American 12-to-17-year-olds said they thought it was possible for them to be president. But almost 80% said they wouldn't be interested in the job. Why? Forty per cent said they weren't interested in politics or had other career plans, 20% said it was too much responsibility, 15% said it was too much work and 14% said that they wouldn't be good at it. |
