-The beginning

The French wanted to celebrate the 100 years of Independance Day. They wanted a present because the American and the French were friends. The beginning of the construction was in 1876 in France.

-Architects

Bartholdi was the inventor of the Statue of Liberty. He entrusted this project to Eugène Viollet le Duc, but he died in 1879. So it's Gustave Eiffel who had the responsability to continue. Eiffel built a copper internal structure and Bartholdi who was a sculptor did the face of the Statue, but we don't know who inspired him.

-The construction

During the construction, the hand of the Statue broke.

The construction lasted 8 years and cost 470000 dollars. But they received 100000 donations.

-The Statue of Liberty

The unveiling took place on 28th October in 1886. The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island in New York and it's ben the heritage of UNESCO since 1984. UNESCO is the United Nations for Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It's famous for its list of heritage buildings and sites in the world.

In the Statue of Liberty, there are 354 steps and the Statue weighs 225 tons. The hand measures 5 meters.

-Tourists

4 or 5 million tourists visit the Statue of Liberty per year. And we can jump with a parachute from the Statue.
